1950 Hudson Hornet Brougham Convertible
WOW, what a car!
Produced in a modest run of 551 copies.
This is the only known specimen in Europe!
An older Swedish car that has been completely restored by a Hudson enthusiast; the restoration is of very high quality, and as a result, we can confirm that it is still in excellent working condition today and makes a very fine impression!
It’s incredibly fun to drive and ride in… In our opinion, it beats most cars from the ’50s and ’60s—you can keep up with highway traffic if you want to!
Sooo… if you want something that’s really unique, is sociable, and likes attention, then this is the obvious choice—you definitely won’t be alone if you hang out at the town square or the gas station!
Some facts:
In 1951, the Hornet was introduced to Hudson’s model lineup. The Hornet featured Hudson’s popular “Monobuilt” or “step-down” design, which had debuted a few years earlier on the 1948 Hudson Commodore.
The term “step-down” comes from the way the floor panel was recessed between the car’s chassis beams instead of the conventional design on top of the frame, so that you had to step down into a Hudson.
This cohesive, unified design lowered the car’s center of gravity, making it both functional and stylish.
The 1951 Hudson Hornet was powered by an L-Head 308 CID six-cylinder engine, which at the time was the largest (in displacement) mass-produced six-cylinder engine.
In November 1951, Hudson introduced the “Twin-H” dual single-cylinder carburetor setup, which was a dealer-installed option on the 1951 models and a factory option starting in 1952.
With its lighter chassis, powerful six-cylinder engine, and Twin-H carburetor setup, the Hudson Hornet proved to be nearly unbeatable in stock car racing.
Racing driver Marshall Teague claimed he could tune the original Hornet engine to reach 180 km/h. Teague went on to win 5 of 15 NASCAR Grand National races in 1951, in his aptly nicknamed “Fabulous Hudson Hornet,” where he often beat the big V8-powered cars like the Cadillac and Oldsmobile. The 1951 Hudson Hornet is perhaps best known among the younger generation (and the young at heart) as “Doc Hudson” from Pixar’s 2006 animated film *Cars*. “Doc” was modeled after the “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” that dominated the NASCAR racing scene in the early 1950s.
The Hornet was available in four body styles, most notably the Convertible Brougham, which is among the rarest 1951 Hudson models, with only 551 units produced.
