The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner is an iconic American classic, known as the world’s first mass-produced car with a retractable hardt op. This “tin cab” combined coupe with convertible via an advanced mechanism, often powered by a 312-cubic-inch V8 engine.
- Technical innovation: The Skyliner roof folded into the trunk with a complex mechanism, which took up a lot of space and significantly limited the trunk space when the roof was down.
- Design & Performance: The model was part of the Fairlane 500 series, characterized by long, elegant design, chrome details and clear fins. It was often equipped with a “Thunderbird Special” V8.
- Status: It was a more luxurious and expensive model (about $400 more) than the regular cloth convertible, the Sunliner.
- Production: Despite technical challenges and a high price tag, 20,766 units of the 1957 model were sold, helping Ford beat Chevrolet in sales that year.
In conclusion, a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner is an advanced example of 1950s engineering and “space age” design, significantly more rare and complex than a standard 1957 Fairlane.
