The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz is considered one of the most iconic luxury cars of the 1950s and represented the pinnacle of American automotive design during this era.
Technical specifications & Performance
The car was equipped with Cadillac’s most powerful engine of the year:
- Engine: A 365 cubic inch (6.0L) V8 with twin four port carburetors (Carter).
- Power: Delivered 325 horsepower, which was 25 more than the standard models.
- Transmission: 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.
- Top speed: Up to approximately 190 km/h (120 mph).
Unique Design
The model was set apart by its dramatic ‘downswept’ rear end, designed by Ron Hill under the direction of Harley Earl. The pointed fins sat lower and further in than on other models, and the rear wheel arches were open and edged with wide stainless steel panels.
Exclusivity and Price
The Eldorado Biarritz was an extremely expensive car for its time:
- Production: Only 1 800 copies were produced in 1957.
- New price: Cost around $7 286 – $7 750, which was more than 1.5 times an average US annual income.
- Collector’s value: Today, well-kept specimens are often valued at very high sums!
